Instrument Rating (Helicopter) courses

FAST Helicopters is a Flight Training Organisation approved by the CAA to conduct courses for the Instrument Rating (Helicopter) or (IR(H)). Courses take place at Thruxton Airfield in Hampshire and utilise a newly purchased Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer Level ll (FNPTll) helicopter simulator together with our in house IFR certified AS355 Twin Squirrel helicopter.

The Simulator replicates a Single Engine Bell 206 with an AS355 mask. The graphics have the latest digital mapping imagery which projects the images onto a high resolution screen giving a 150° panoramic image with 40° depths for the pilot. The Instructor Operating Station at the rear of the simulator allows the complete range of flight simulation inputs. An instructor can teach from the left hand seat when required as the cockpit is fitted with dual controls. We also have the facility to use the Optical Crew Resource Analyser (OCRA), which is a tool to teach and assess scanning of instruments and visual references.

Some of the benefits of simulator training:-

  • Reduced training costs
  • All weather flying
  • Instant choice of weather conditions
  • 'Fly' from national and international airfields
  • Airconditioned, relaxed training environment
  • Multiple training possibilities available in seconds
  • Re-fly exercises and sorties at the touch of a button
  • Simulate dangerous situations in complete safety
  • Train during pilot stand-by periods
